Physician Spotlight: Drs. Robert A. Hardin & William C. Thompson
Maintaining that line of communication between the hospital and its medical staff is a CMO’s top priority, both men agreed. “Whenever a physician who has been a practicing physician becomes the chief medical officer, the comment they usually make is that you’ve gone over to the dark side,” Hardin quipped.

Letter from the Publisher : Happy New Year!
This time of year naturally lends itself to pausing to reflect on the past and envision the future. Accepting the challenge to become the publisher of Nashville Medical News in 2007 was certainly a professional highlight for me. While I brought a heavy publication background to the job at hand, I’ve also had much to learn about the expansive … and internationally renowned … “local” healthcare industry.

CMS Reimbursement Changes Increase Hospital Focus on Infection
Change is coming, and for those who are unprepared, it could prove to be costly. Beginning Oct. 1, 2008, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will no longer provide reimbursement over and above the typical Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) rate for care required to battle several types of healthcare-associated infection, also referred to as hospital acquired infection (HAI).

Harnessing Your Hospital’s Political Power
Few organizations in Nashville — or any other part of the country — are as politically powerful as your hospital. Yes, your hospital. Across Middle Tennessee, citizens depend on your hospital to care for them and their loved ones during their neediest times. This is a commitment and responsibility that every successful healthcare provider takes on with great pride and respect.

Embracing Wellness as a Way of Life
When I finished my graduate work in exercise physiology more than two decades ago, corporate wellness initiatives rarely went beyond on-site workout facilities or discounted gym memberships for employees. Thankfully, though, wellness is taking on a much broader meaning these days, especially among employers struggling to keep employees and profits healthy.
