Last month, Nashville-based Healthcare Bluebook announced that it is providing - for the first time in the company's history - free access to its comprehensive online tool for researching and comparing local provider cost and quality for healthcare services. The free offer is currently available only to residents of Middle Tennessee. The Healthcare Bluebook search tool allows consumers to compare the price ratings for healthcare facilities in Middle Tennessee for thousands of procedures, from x-rays to joint replacements.

"We want Nashville to be the first city in the U.S. where healthcare pricing is transparent to the consumer - where the plague of 'Price Blindness' has been cured,'" said Healthcare Bluebook CEO Jeffrey Rice, MD, at a press conference announcing the initiative. "Healthcare is the one industry in which people make purchases without knowing the cost in advance. The fact is, there are often huge differences between hospitals and other healthcare facilities for the exact same procedure. We're going to peel back the curtain for everyone in Middle Tennessee so that they can make informed decisions about their healthcare."
