Through the support from several major donors, Retrieving Independence, a non-profit service dog organization, cut the ribbon on a new bus last month. Retrieving Independence works with Turney Center Industrial Complex to employ inmates to train the service dogs once they reach 16 weeks old. The dogs then spend 12 to 16 months with the inmates learning 110+ cues and spending 600+ hours in training sessions before being matched to a client. Leaders with the organization said It is important to have a large, safe, and dog-friendly bus to transport the dogs back and forth from Turney Center. The new bus has more than 10 kennels installed for the dogs to ride safely and has heat, air conditioning, and four seats for trainers to ride with the dogs.
