The annual Chic Awearness fundraising event which supports ovarian cancer research at major medical centers, including Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), will be held Monday, Sept. 25, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., at Prima Restaurant, 700 12th Ave. South, Nashville.
Ronald Alvarez, M.D., M.B.A., Betty and Lonnie S. Burnett Professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at VUMC, will serve as the featured medical speaker and will detail the progress made in the research laboratory during the last year.
Founded by ovarian cancer survivor Marci Houff, the Chic Awearness event is designed to improve survival for ovarian cancer through awareness and education about the disease along with support for laboratory research.
Cancers of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and primary peritoneum (tissue lining the inside of the abdomen) are the fifth leading cause of cancer death among women in the U.S., according to the National Cancer Institute.
Currently, there is no reliable screening test for ovarian cancer which is often detected late in the disease process.
One of the highlights of the Chic Awearness event is a fashion show presented by Levy's Clothiers featuring models who have a personal connection with the disease. The evening also includes medical education and emotional testimony from ovarian cancer survivors.
