Last year marked the centennial of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution giving women the right to vote, through which public art nonprofit DMA-events produced Walls for Women, a series of murals that employed female artists to paint large-scale murals across the state of Tennessee. Columbia will be the next city to join this creative movement

"We're very excited to add Columbia to our roster of Walls for Women cities," DMA president Kristin Luna says. "Columbia's downtown core has undergone such an impressive revitalization in the past decade, and we can't wait to be a part of the next wave of transformation as the city continues to build out its arts corridor."

After hearing of the program, tourism director Kellye Murphy reached out to DMA about the City of Columbia participating in the next cohort of Walls for Women cities. In March, the city council voted to support the art initiative as a patron and partner. Preparation work for the project is slated to start in early September at a location near the Columbia Town Square. Tara Aversa has been selected as the artist for this mural.
