From the Publishers: New Year's Reflections & Renewal

The New Year always seems to instill a desire to reflect on the past and refocus for the future. Each shiny new January also brings about a resolve to make things better in the coming months ... whether that is to lose 10 pounds on a personal level or deploy innovative measures to address the obesity epidemic gripping Tennessee and the nation.

Even in the midst of great uncertainty, this month's articles reflect that theme of self-assessment and planning for a brighter future for the healthcare industry and the patients it serves. While the nation awaits clarification on the Affordable Care Act, leaders of our state organizations representing hospitals and health systems, physicians and nurses are busy making plans and setting legislative agendas to address the work at hand. Although there might be discussion ... and occasionally even a little dissention ... about the best path to get there, the leadership teams of the major professional associations are firmly united in their desire to ensure access to high quality, affordable care for all Tennesseans.

With an eye toward the future, Sen. Lamar Alexander shares his excitement about the 21st Century Cures Act (read it here), the Nashville Health Care Council announces the latest group of Council Fellows who will help transform the industry (read it here), Urology Associates debuts a new option to treat some prostate cancers (read it here), and Vanderbilt moves forward in their quest to change Alzheimer's care (read it here). And, of course, January is filled with resolve to improve the health status of Nashvillians and all those living in Tennessee.

At Nashville Medical News, we are also busy reflecting on the paper's past and eagerly looking ahead to reframe our future. Some are aware ... though many of our readers might not be ... that the paper changed hands in August 2016. When the opportunity was presented to purchase the paper from SouthComm Communications last summer, we jumped at the chance to add 'publisher' to our titles. Nashville Medical News has been in continuous operation under a handful of publishing groups for almost 25 years in Middle Tennessee, and the two of us have worked with each of them over the course of our involvement of nearly two decades to help grow the paper into the premier source of clinical and business news here in the nation's healthcare capital.

We are also eagerly looking to the future and ways to expand our reach and coverage. One way we are doing that is through this month's launch of our new blog (nashvillemedicalnews.blog), which will bring our readers additional expert insight into specific topics of interest.
