Michael Christie, MD, orthopedic surgeon at Southern Joint Replacement Institute and TriStar Centennial Medical Center, was awarded the 2020 Humanitarian Award from the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS). Dr. Christie has been a member of AAHKS for 25 years and involved in humanitarian activities for his entire career. He currently serves as the president of the Walk Strong Foundation which he founded in 2008 after being inspired by Operation Walk, a non-profit organization supporting AIDS orphans in Tanzania. The Walk Strong Foundation is a non-profit organization providing knee replacement surgery at no charge to disadvantaged patients in underserved countries with follow up care provided by well-trained, local surgeons. Each mission makes a 10-year commitment that includes sustained education, training, equipment and infrastructure donations. Dr. Christie established the first site at the Hospital de Alta Especialidad in Veracruz, Mexico and added a second site recently at University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica.
