Bariatric Centers of Excellence
In 2004, the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, through its independent administrator the Surgical Review Corporation, launched the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence (BSCOE) program. The designation is awarded to bariatric centers and individual surgeons who meet or exceed accepted standards of care.
“The ASMBS took responsibility for making sure quality programs in America were being identified,” said Dr. Albert T. Spaw, co-medical director of the Baptist Hospital Metabolic Surgery Center.
Registered nurse Pam Davis, bariatric clinical manager for the Centennial Center for the Treatment of Obesity, said the designation is awarded to programs that consider “the little things and more significant things, as well.”
From providing larger gowns and beds to accommodate the special needs of the morbidly obese to assembling a skilled, multidisciplinary team with a focus on safety and sensitivity, Davis said the BSCOE seal should provide an additional level of confidence to patients and referring physicians.
To date, 305 bariatric programs and 539 surgeons in the United States have earned the right to use the “Center of Excellence” designation. Nashville is home to three BSCOE centers plus eight surgeons, who must be board certified and/or a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and have completed a minimum of 25 surgeries among other requirements.
