Nashville pharmacist Phil Bradley of Bradley Drug Co. on Charlotte Pike is one of 10 pharmacists nationwide to be recognized for “going above and beyond the call of duty to provide exemplary education, guidance and service to people managing diabetes.” Bradley received the award Oct. 7 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort from Health Mart, a national network of nearly 2,800 independently owned pharmacies.

Inspired by having diabetic parents and recently losing his own mother to the disease, Bradley uses creativity and compassion to slow the epidemic in Tennessee. From innovative technologies like patient teleconferencing and Bluetooth health monitors to personalized diabetes education classes, this independent pharmacist is helping Nashville community members manage and overcome diabetes.

To accommodate diabetic patients who are homebound, Bradley incorporates Skype webcam technology so his pharmacists can remotely offer guidance and support. Bradley also developed a Bluetooth communication process that transmits patient blood glucose, blood pressure, pedometer data and weight in real time. The process is HIPAA compliant, and emergency readings can be sent to assigned cell phones within 45 seconds.

Bradley recently built an 8,000-square-foot store next to his pharmacy called Everything Diabetic. More than just a storefront selling products, Bradley has a diabetes educator onsite, and cooking classes are offered to reinforce healthy lifestyles.

“We look at diabetes as not a killer but as something we can live with, maintain and live a healthy life,” Bradley said.  “Instead of it being a death sentence, it’s something we can now monitor and control.”

The Health Mart® Diabetes Care Excellence Award program is a component of the Health Mart Healthy Living Tourwhich was on the road during the summer raising diabetes awareness by conducting more than 90 health screenings at Health Mart Pharmacies across the country.
