Project C.U.R.E. Collecting Donations, Emergency Medical Relief Supplies for Cuba
Project C.U.R.E., which donates medical supplies and builds up medical infrastructure in 120 countries across the globe, has been working in Cuba since 1997. In the wake of Hurricane Gustav, which devastated much of the country, Project C.U.R.E. is collecting and sending out emergency supplies immediately. Nashville is one of the nonprofit organization's distribution centers.
"We are prepared to make a massive contribution of medical relief,” said Project C.U.R.E. CEO and President Dr. Douglas Jackson. “Our primary concern is getting the necessary medical supplies to the people in Cuba who need it the most.”
Project C.U.R.E. operates in Cuba under a license from the United States government that creates an exemption from the terms of the embargo. The organization will be delivering the first loads of emergency relief through an airlift effort. The chartered plane will depart from Miami and land in Santiago, from which medical relief supplies will be delivered to area hospitals and clinics in hard-hit coastal cities such as Baracoa. Additional loads will be delivered via 40-foot ocean-going cargo containers the size of semi-truck trailers.
Funds are needed to pay the expenses to deliver these loads of medical supplies. On average, the delivery of a 40-ft cargo container costs approximately $20,000. Typically, the contents are valued at approximately $400,000 (wholesale) of life saving medical equipment and supplies. For more information, go online to
