Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance (TOA) recently announced their donation of SKYSCAN Lightning Detectors to promote lightning safety for their partner high schools located in Davidson, Rutherford, and Sumner Counties. SKYSCAN is a hand-held instrument with the electronic sophistication to detect lightning as far as 40 miles away and accurately ranges its approach to allow plenty of time to clear the practice or game field.
TOA Team Physicians presented the schools certified athletic trainer with a unit during pre-season workouts. A lightning detector can be life saving tool by indicating conditions that are favorable for a deadly strike. Most lightning strikes occur between May and September during the hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., which coincides with the schedules of many athletic practices and games.
Baptist Sports Medicine has received a $121,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Health for their youth fitness program … Commit To Get Fit™.
The Commit To Get Fit™ program is designed to challenge youth and their families to make a positive and permanent change by incorporating fitness, healthy lifestyle choices and a positive mental focus into their lives. Elements of the program include pre- and post-program fitness assessments, on-site workouts for 12 weeks, group exercise classes led by a certified instructor and discussions about fitness, nutrition and character building.
