Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital welcomes Dr. Steven Filardo, M.D., a cardiologist specializing in interventional cardiology, to the Saint Thomas Heart team. Saint Thomas Health is part of Ascension, the nation's largest Catholic and non-profit health system.

Dr. Filardo's specialty procedures include cardiac cathertization and stent implantation.

"We look forward to adding his expertise to our team as we continue to grow the cardiovascular services offered to those we serve in Rutherford County and the surrounding communities."

Previously, Dr. Filardo began a door-to-balloon program, which measures a patient's time during a specific cardiac event known as STEMI. For this program, Dr. Filardo and his team were awarded the Bronze Medal from the American Heart Association.

Dr. Filardo earned his B.S. and Masters in Public Health, both from UCLA, and his Medical Doctorate at Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Maryland. He served as a flight surgeon and later as an active duty Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. He completed his cardiology and interventional cardiology training at Stanford University.

Dr. Filardo previously served patients as a cardiologist in Ohio, Indiana, and most recently in Kentucky at Baptist Health Corbin, where he served as Medical Director at the Interventional Cardiologist and Chest Pain Center.
