New Clinician Spotlight: Saeed Mohammad

Saeed Mohammad, MD, MS, recently joined Vanderbilt University Medical Center as director of the Pediatric Solid Organ Transplant Center at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. 

“Dr. Mohammad is a national leader in pediatric liver transplant and we are so pleased to welcome him to Vanderbilt,” said Seth Karp, MD, H. William Scott Jr. Professor, chair of the Section of Surgical Sciences and director of the Vanderbilt Transplant Center. “Under his leadership of the pediatric transplant center, we plan to expand the innovative services we provide to children with all end-stage organ disease treated with solid-organ transplantation.”

“Saeed has had a major impact on the field of pediatric liver transplantation,” said Steven Webber, MBChB, MRCP, James C. Overall Professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics. “We look forward to him advancing growth and innovation for all our transplant programs here at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.”

Mohammad is an internationally recognized pediatric transplant hepatologist. His clinical interests include liver transplantation, biliary atresia, Alagille syndrome, acute liver failure, autoimmune liver disease, and portal hypertension. His research interests are focused on improving the long term health outcomes of children with liver disease through providing new therapies, improving medication adherence and measuring quality of life.

Throughout his career, Mohammad has established himself as a leader in his field and has developed several innovative clinical programs at Northwestern including a transition program for young adult transplant recipients and a program for children with Fontan associated liver disease.

“I feel privileged to be able to return to Vanderbilt where my professional career began,” Mohammad said. “Vanderbilt has a proud history of excellence in both pediatrics and transplantation, and I am excited to join this team as we work to develop a comprehensive pediatric focused transplant center to care for the children in Tennessee and across the nation.”

Mohammad received his medical degree from the Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. He then completed his pediatrics residency training at Vanderbilt University before moving to Northwestern University, where he completed a pediatric gastroenterology fellowship and a transplant hepatology fellowship before being recruited to the Northwestern faculty.

Mohammad has served in leadership roles in the Society of Pediatric Liver Transplantation; American Association for the Study of Liver Disease; North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition; Autoimmune Hepatitis Association; American Liver Foundatio; and the United Network for Organ Sharing.
