Jim Hayman, MS, MBA, Senior Vice President and chief pharmacy officer, has been named to the newly created role of Executive Vice President for the Shared Clinical Services Division. The newly forming division will follow a shared services model and will initially include administrative and organizational alignment of Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s pharmacy, laboratory and sterile processing services. In the new role, Hayman reports to C. Wright Pinson, MBA, MD, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Health System Officer, and is charged with leading the new division’s development.

At VUMC, historically, most clinical support services have resided as single entities and have been allocated to serve various other Medical Center entities. Due to VUMC’s expansive growth, core services have reached the scale at which a new shared services model, creating greater alignment, standardization, and efficiencies for these services, is needed.

“I am delighted that Jim Hayman will be serving in this new role. For the nearly 15 years Jim has been with our organization, he has done an outstanding job strengthening and advancing our pharmacy services. He has prior career experience with shared services operations and deep understanding of the interrelationships among our existing core services,” Pinson said. “I am confident in Jim’s contributions as we form this new division to better meet our health system’s needs.”

The Shared Clinical Services Division will reside within the Clinical Enterprise and will support VUMC’s various entities such as Vanderbilt University Hospital, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt Health Services along with Vanderbilt Health’s community hospitals and ambulatory clinics.

The new division’s goals are to ensure enterprise alignment, economies of scale and operational synergies, standards of best practice enhancing quality, patient safety and compliance while eliminating variability.

“One of the things I like best about VUMC is there are always new opportunities. I am looking forward to serving in this new role and addressing the challenges that it will bring,” Hayman said.

Hayman joined VUMC in 2008 as chief pharmacy officer. Earlier this year, he was promoted to senior vice president. As VUMC’s pharmacy services touch essentially every corner of the health system, he has longstanding relationships with entity leaders from across the organization.

His extensive background includes leadership positions in both pharmacy and hospital administration for health systems in Indiana and Mississippi. During a 20-plus-year tenure at Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas, he served in senior leadership roles in pharmacy, pathology and radiology as well as professional services and clinical support.

Hayman is a Fellow of the American Society of Health-system Pharmacists and serves as chair of McKesson’s Pharmacy Executive Alliance, a group which advises McKesson on patient safety, clinical and regulatory issues, and operational trends in pharmacy practice. He is a recognized leader in specialty pharmacy.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy and Master of Science in hospital pharmacy from the University of Mississippi, and a Master of Business Administration in health systems management from the University of Dallas. He completed a residency hospital pharmacy at the Medical University of South Carolina.
