NASHVILLE Western Governors University (WGU) has named Estill Springs resident David Statum as one of the university’s Distinguished Graduates.

Statum earned his bachelor of science degree in nursing and master of science degree in nursing education from the accredited online university in 2013 and 2014, respectively. He presently serves as the Executive Director, Founder, and CEO of Family Food Ministry, Inc. He also serves as a coordinator at Coffee County Family Treatment Court.

WGU’s Distinguished Graduate award recipients were honored as “examples of inspiration and dedication.” Their work and volunteer efforts go above and beyond, making a significant impact in their communities and career fields. WGU has more than 301,000 alumni in the United States, including more than 9,500 graduates across all 95 counties in Tennessee.

With the desire to become more clinical and better serve his clients, Statum decided to pursue his M.S. degree from WGU. After graduation, he was able to put his degree toward starting his own private counseling practice.

“WGU Tennessee provided me with an exceptional education experience,” Statum said. “I was able to complete my master’s degree without financial burden from a brick-and-mortar university. My mentors were so great to share with me all the knowledge and resources that I needed to be successful in my career journey.”

Statum is an accomplished nurse psychotherapist for court-sponsored addictions treatment programs. He now dedicates his time to his community through his own food ministry, serving more than 2,500 people every week. He founded Family Food Ministry, Inc., in response to his community’s needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Statum and his team developed a large footprint in Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky, distributing over 100,000 pounds of food each week at 272 distribution locations for families and people in need.

“David’s dedication to serving his community and helping those in need through his counseling services and Family Food Ministry, Inc., demonstrates a great deal of hard work and selflessness,” said Kimberly K. Estep, WGU Southeast Regional Vice President. “I extend my congratulations on behalf of WGU to him on this honor and to all his accomplishments.”
