Virginia Planz, MD, has been named section chief of Body Imaging in the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences.

She previously served as the director of Interventional CT and Ultrasound and worked as the associate section chief with Chris Jones, MD, assistant professor of Clinical Radiology.

“I’m truly honored and very excited to have the opportunity to lead this talented group of dedicated body imaging experts,” Planz said. “Our section provides invaluable subspecialized services for our adult Vanderbilt patients that are critical to patient care, including the interpretation of complex MRI, CT and ultrasound in oncologic, organ transplant, level one trauma and critical care patients.

“As our imaging enterprise grows, I plan to continue the mission of providing outstanding and high-quality diagnostic radiology services, ongoing contributions to research, and a top-tier academic experience for our trainees. I am grateful to Dr. Chris Jones for his leadership and his many impactful contributions during his time as section chief,” Planz said.

Jones has led the section during a time of significant growth. Reed Omary, MD, MS, Carol D. and Henry P. Pendergrass Professor and chair of the department, said he is excited by the accomplishments of the Body Imaging team and looks forward to the section’s next chapter.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the leadership of Dr. Jones,” Omary said. “His efforts in patient care, quality initiatives and section leadership have directly advanced vital institutional missions. Dr. Jones is a phenomenal radiologist, and we are thankful that he will continue in the section to support Dr. Planz’s transition. We’re delighted to welcome Dr. Planz into this new leadership role and look forward to her helping us grow.”
