Vanderbilt University cancer researcher Ann Richmond, PhD, has won the 2016 William S. Middleton Award, the highest honor for scientific achievement bestowed by the Biomedical Laboratory Research and Development Service of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Richmond, a professor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and senior career scientist with the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, was honored for significant contributions to understanding "chemokines," inflammatory proteins that can regulate tumor growth. Her research has helped lay the foundation for understanding how to improve the effectiveness of immunotherapies against melanoma, which occurs disproportionately among Gulf War veterans.


Patrick Ryan, MD

Patrick Ryan, MD, FACS, founder of Nashville Vascular & Vein Institute recently has been named to two national committees focused on quality outcomes within the field of vascular medicine - the Society for Vascular Surgery Quality and Performance Measures Committee and the Vascular Quality Initiative Research Committee.


Ancelmo Lopes

Healthcare executive Ancelmo Lopes, who has experience in operating room efficiency, pain medication monitoring and health plans, has been named to the board of Nashville-based PhyMed Healthcare Group, a physician-led and owned provider of anesthesia and pain management services. Lopes is currently chairman of the board for Surgical Solutions, LLC.

Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital has earned top honors from the Cribs for Kids® National Safe Sleep Certification Program, a national safety program dedicated to preventing infant, sleep-related deaths due to accidental suffocation. The hospital was named a National Certified Gold Safe Sleep Champion for promoting best safe sleep practices and educating the community about infant sleep safety.

Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP had 12 attorneys from across four of the firm's offices contribute to the American Health Lawyers Association's (AHLA) newly published guide Representing Hospitals and Health Systems Handbook. Nashville associate Travis G. Lloyd served as coordinating editor and Jackson partner and past AHLA president Dinetia Newman served as co-editor. Nashville partners and associates Jay Hardcastle, John M. Perry, Jr., Lauren B. Jacques and Paige Miller authored the chapter on transactions. In addition, Amy Leopard and Sarah Daugherty edited various chapters.

The Council on Aging (COA) of Middle Tennessee presented the 25th Anniversary Sage Awards on Oct. 18, 2016, at Omni Nashville Hotel. Four exceptional seniors were recognized for their visionary leadership and lifelong commitment to improving quality of life in their communities. The honorees were: Berdelle T. Campbell of Nashville, introduced by former Mayor Bill Purcell; Rep. Brenda Gilmore of Nashville, introduced by Council Lady Erica Gilmore; Cleatrice C. McTorry of Brentwood, introduced by Gwendolyn Rees; and James Vandiver of Nashville, introduced by Charles Bone. Former news personality Harry Chapman served as the event's master of ceremonies.
