This year marks the seventh annual Wine Around the Square (WATS) event, a progressive wine tasting event in downtown Murfreesboro to benefit the Saint Thomas Rutherford Foundation's Power of Pink, Rutherford County's premier program in the fight against breast cancer. This year the event is set for Saturday, September 15, from 6-9p. Over the past twelve years, the Saint Thomas Rutherford Foundation has raised more than $1,275,000 for underinsured and uninsured friends and neighbors who need potentially life-saving mammograms through events like Wine Around the Square. During Fiscal Year 2017, Power of the Pink sponsored more than 500 procedures, including 295 mammograms, 131 diagnostic mammograms, 111 breast ultrasounds and three breast MRIs.

Kay Boyd, 2018 WATS honoree:

Kay Boyd, a longtime resident of Murfreesboro, has a long history of working in the field of medicine. If anyone was surprised to be diagnosed with breast cancer, it was Kay. In 2001 Kay went to her scheduled annual mammogram and received news that there was an abnormal area in her upper outer left quadrant. After a second mammogram confirmed the findings, Kay underwent a Breast Biopsy, which confirmed that Chemotherapy was the next step. With the support of her co-worker's friends and her husband Dale she worked full time throughout her chemo and radiation. Her daughter Caroline mentions, "she's one of the strongest people I know". Based on the type of cancer she had invasive ductile carcinoma, and lymph node involvement, it was highly probable that it would reoccur in the other side. She made the decision with her care team that completing the bilateral mastectomy was the right decision. She had the surgery in June of 2003 followed by reconstruction. Each year before her annual exams and checkup, Kay says the same feelings she had around her diagnosis resurface, but it's a further reminder of why regular mammograms are so important and a celebration of her many years being cancer free!
